Squares

The fragments and traces from the past reveal Zadar’s antiquity, whereas its dynamic squares demonstrate the urban identity of the city and its authentic connections to the Mediterranean and European culture. Zadar is a city of squares, where everything happens and everything gets disclosed.

Church of Our Lady of Health

The painting of the Lady of Castello, painted by Blaž Jurjev Trogiranin (Blaise de Trogir) in the 15^th century, was preserved in the Church of Our Lady of Health, and today it is a part of the permanent display of the Exhibition of Religious Art, the so-called Gold and Silver of Zadar. The church has been very popular among many generations of Zadar citizens.

Church and Monastery of St Michael

The Church and Monastery of St Michael is in a possession of a collection of artefacts, the most valuable of which are the painting of Our Lady of Snow, dating back to the beginning of the 17^th century, Saint Lucy by an unknown painter, the Last Supper, and the Flagellation of Christ, all three from the 16^th century.

Palaces

Zadar is a city of palaces. The three-thousand-year-old past of the city is interwoven in its Mediterranean and European urban identity. The face of Zadar is represented by small and bigger squares, narrow streets, ancient churches and monumental memories from the past, as well as luxurious palaces from the Middle Ages and later periods, that are quietly leaning on the remains of Roman and Late-Antique buildings.

Barkajoli, the Rowing Boatmen of Zadar

From early morning to late evening, the Barkajoli take passengers and tourists with a little rowing boat across the Zadar peninsula to mainland and back, thus cultivating, according to some daring explorers, a 3,000-year-old tradition.

Greeting to the Sun

The new symbol of Zadar is located in the Zadar port on the western point of Zadar Peninsula. The Greeting to the Sun is overlooking the Zadar Channel, the islands and the world-famous sunset. With this installation, Zadar has got a new tourist attraction.

Arsenal

The Arsenal of Zadar dates back to the 16th century. This large port warehouse was expanded in 1752 under the rule of providur (overseer) Jeronim Marija Balbi, to which the inscription on the plaque on the front of the building testifies.

Churches

When the legendary traveller, Jason, founded Zadar with his Argonauts, according to a Zadar poet, it just might be that the original ground stone built in its foundation was a sanctuary. On a small space, during a long period, churches have been built one upon the other older, as evidence of continuity of the spiritual life of its citizens.

Church and Monastery of St Mary

The Monastery of St Mary in Zadar was founded by the Zadar noblewoman Čika in 1066, by her mother, the sister of the Croatian king Peter Krešimir IV, and the big three-nave Church of St Mary was built in 1091 in the Pre-Romanesque style.

Forum

The Forum in Zadar was built by the first Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian, as witnessed by the stone inscriptions dating back to the 3^rd century, when the construction finished. It was once enclosed by a portico with galleries on the first floor, and under the portico there used to be shops and stalls.

Petar Zoranić Square

The Petar Zoranić Square in Zadar carries the name of the famous Renaissance poet and novelist. You can reach the Square coming from different directions; streets, alleys and squares. Today, the Petar Zoranić Square is a place of gathering, amusement, and the location for the biggest city happenings and events.

Zadar Puppet Theatre

The Zadar Puppet Theatre has left a permanent mark on Croatian puppetry, and it is one of the recognizable Zadar cultural products.
