Čika / Chicca

Čika / Chicca (Zadar, second half of 11th century - Zadar, after 1095), founder of the convent of St. Mary in Zadar

Čika / Chicca (Zadar, second half of 11th century - Zadar, after 1095), founder of the convent of St. Mary in Zadar and sister to Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV on her mother´s side

Čika, like the Croatian queen Helen (Jelena), was a member of the Zadar patrician family of Madijevac and a particularly strong character of 11th century Zadar. After her husband Andrew’s death at around 1066, she founded the Benedictine convent of St. Mary, assisted by her family, and where she was mother superior for many years.

Čika’s daughter Vekenega, after the tragic death of her husband at around 1072, was also ordained in the convent and, just like her mother, became mother superior and Cika’s successor.
