Eleonora Duse

World famous Italian actress Eleonora Duse acted for the first time in her life as a five-year-old girl on 12th March 1863 in Zadar in the Teatro Nobile theatre of the time …

Among hundreds of actors and singers, various guest performances of Italian theatres and theatre groups in 19th century Zadar, the guest performance by the best representative of Italian acting Ermette Novelli is mentioned as a particular curiosity, as well as the fact that the great Italian actress Eleonora Duse performed twice in Zadar (Vigevano 1858 – 1924 Pittsburgh).

This fact is even more remarkable since Eleonora Duse was considered as one of the greatest drama actresses of her time and her debut performance was right here in the Teatro Nobile theatre on 12th March 1863 when she was only five years old. Eleonora’s parents Vicenzo Duse and Angelica Cappelletto belonged to a travelling acting company which performed Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” in Zadar at the time.
